AI and Safety Notice
Effective 21 September 2026.
Characters are AI
Every character on Duo is software. Their words are generated by machine-learning models. They are not people, they do not have credentials, and they are not a licensed therapist, doctor, lawyer, or financial adviser. Duo is not a healthcare service and is not for emergencies.
Duo is for adults 18 and over. Companion chatbots may not be suitable for some minors.
If you are in crisis
If you are thinking about harming yourself, or you are in immediate danger, please reach out to a person now.
- United States: call or text 988 (Suicide and Crisis Lifeline), or text HOME to 741741 (Crisis Text Line). Call 911 in an emergency.
- Elsewhere: contact your local emergency number or crisis line.
What Duo does when a conversation turns to self-harm
Every character carries a standing instruction that overrides its persona: if you say you are thinking about hurting yourself or ending your life, the character will step out of character, say plainly that it is an AI and that it cares what happens to you, share the crisis resources above, and will not continue the roleplay past that point. This applies in text and on calls. We review how this works as the product grows and will strengthen it.
Content limits
The Content Policy sets the limits every character and every user is held to, including an absolute ban on sexual content involving minors and on content that promotes self-harm.
